Solidarity is probably the word that appears most frequently in the anarchist vocabulary. In many cases, we distinguish it from the notion of humanitarian aid—emphasizing that we do not act as saviors or missionaries, but by supporting or joining someone’s struggle.
But what happens when there are too many causes we want to show solidarity with? What does it mean to refuse solidarity for political reasons? What if the condition for receiving solidarity is to be a victim rather than a fighter?
And how can we live within a movement that declares equality and horizontality, yet seems to reproduce all the colonial and capitalist patterns in the distribution of solidarity?
In this talk, I will share an Eastern European perspective on anarchist solidarity based on my podcast Dogma: Uncomfortable Conversation about War, in which I spoke to European anarchists in the context of the war in Ukraine. The transcript of the episodes is published in English and will be presented as a book.
Speaker: Lera Khotsina, Belarusian anarchist in exile.
Language: English.
